I watched Lupita Nyongo’s Oscar acceptance speech for the first time today and was moved to tears by how overwhelmed she was at winning the Oscar, but I was mostly touched by her closing sentence where she said “when I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you are from, your dreams are valid.”
I am really moved by that. I am also greatly encouraged. I see that we are actually able to do all things that we set our hearts to do. That no dream is too big and nothing is out of your reach, if you plan, prepare, take intelligent action and give it time. One of my dreams has been to see the world- to visit every country at least once. And there was a time when this dream seemed unrealistic- I had no money, no time, no visas, didn’t even know how to apply… nothing. I know for some this has never been a problem, but for me, my heart always wanted to be free, always wanted to marvel at creation, always wanted to wonder and wander. And I know you have something that tugs at your heart-strings, that you want to do but which feels impossible, which feels so far away… I just want you to know that your own dreams ARE valid. They are unique to you; no one can dream for you and no one can limit your dreams but you! Dream it, you don’t need to know the “how” yet, just dream. Know your own “why”. Why do you love what you love, why must you work towards this dream? What are you trying to achieve by pursuing it? What is your why? Once you have that sorted, you can then start to plan, prepare and position yourself for your “how”. And usually, it works out, because with clarity, you give your mind something tangible to focus on. So my dream to go everywhere once hasn’t happened yet but you know what? By keeping the dream alive and being intentional about it, slowly but surely, I look at my dream and say “yay! I’m gaining ground”. Sometimes I plan it, sometimes God who gives me better than I deserve, sends an opportunity my way; and I feel truly grateful and humbled by the fact that this little girl from a little town in the middle belt of Nigeria, will hope, pray and dream, and the God of the universe will answer and make it start to happen! It’s fantastic! And you know what? It’ll be fantastic for you too, dream it, plan it, achieve it! Anyhow, I recently got the chance to visit Dublin in the Republic of Ireland and wanted to share some photos with you:
I hope you enjoyed my photos. Remember you can share your photos on my blog by writing a guest post, read Leah and Akaji’s adventures here and here. Truly, my heart is filled with gratitude. I feel like David when he said “who am I that God is mindful of me?”, I am not deserving of that sea-view and almost everything else in my life but I am blessed that God knowing what I love, what draws at me, allows my heart to see beauty in the land of the living. I hope you stop and stare too, may the world not be too much with us!
Ciao! Be awesome this week and chase that dream down. Don’t let life happen to you, you happen to life!
